Top seed Gael Monfils will begin his effort in Stuttgart, as he faces veteran Victor Hanescu on Tuesday. The Frenchman is joined by second seed Jurgen Melzer, who takes on Santiago Giraldo.
(1) Gael Monfils vs. Victor Hanescu
World No. 7 Gael Monfils leads Victor Hanescu 2-1 entering into the opening round. The players last clashed at the 2008 Olympics, where the Frenchman won in straight sets. They are split 1-1 on clay.
Monfils makes his return after winning a key Davis Cup singles rubber for France this weekend. Following a successful effort from compatriot Richard Gasquet, Monfils gave the 2010 runner-up a 2-0 advantage heading into doubles.
World No. 84 Victor Hanescu is 15-19 for the season. The 29-year-old Romanian looks to win consecutive matches for the first time since May, when he made the final in Nice.
(2) Jurgen Melzer vs. Santiago Giraldo
World No. 12 Jurgen Melzer holds a 2-0 series edge against Santiago Giraldo prior to their first-round match. Tuesday signals their first meeting on clay.
Melzer returns to competition after reaching the round of 32 at Wimbledon. The 30-year-old Austrian earned his best season result in April, when he reached the final four in Monte-Carlo.
World No. 61 Santiago Giraldo has compiled a 19-16 record this season. The 23-year-old looks to equal his results during the South American clay-court swing, where he finished runner-up to Tommy Robredo in Santiago.

What happened to Davy these days? He lost his match against an unknown player! So sad to see him like this. I really hope that he can do better at Hamburg.
