  • Spanish hero Ferrer back in action in Bastad

    7/11/11 6:09 PM | Ricky Dimon
Spanish hero Ferrer back in action in Bastad David Ferrer will contest this week's Swedish Open after leading Spain to a Davis Cup win over the United States. Ferrer headlines the field along with Robin Soderling.

There will be little time to celebrate for David Ferrer, who earned two tough singles wins over the weekend and paced Spain to a 3-1 Davis Cup quarterfinal win over the United States.

Ferrer heads back to Europe and will return to action for this week's SkiStar Swedish Open. He will also be making another surface transition; from the grass courts of Wimbledon, to the fast indoor hard courts of Austin, to the clay of Bastad.

The world No. 6 is joined in a strong field by top-seeded Robin Soderling, the local hope, and No. 3 seed Tomas Berdych. Every one of the top four seeds has a bye to round two, and if the seeds hold to form, Soderling and Berdych would meet in one semifinal with Ferrer and fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro going head-to-head on the other side of the bracket.

Both Ferrer and Almagro have favorable draws. Almagro will open with a qualifier and nobody in his quarter is playing particularly well; Ferrer's nearest seed--No. 5 Tommy Robredo--is already out.

Soderling could face a difficult opener in the form of Igor Andreev, while Berdych is on a collision course for the quarterfinals with dangerous clay-courter Juan Monaco.

Even with Ferrer's dog-like determination he's bound to be tired from his (Spain's) Davis triumph.

I think one of the reasons talented people like Davydenko and Ferrer never win a slam is that they don' t think they can. So they keep playing all kinds of tournaments to keep up their ranking and earn more money and reach the slams tired and not expecting to reach the final nor fresh enough to do so.

why is he playing a clay court tournament now?!

and i do think you may be right, holdserve, reg the self belief. I always felt davydenko esp deserved at least one slam.

I would by no means call Ferrer or Davydenko "talented" compared to the truly "talented" players on tour.

Gulbis and Safin were "talented" players who underachieved.

Ferrer and Davydenko, by contrast, have physical limitations and making great careers for themselves despite not being particularly talented.

Ricky,

Isn't Gulbis still playing? Why did you say "were"? Agree that both Ferrer and Davy are not exactly tennis prodigies but guys who overcame their height issues/ limitations.

If Hewitt and Roddick can win slams so can Ferrer and Davydenko.
Or maybe what you guys are saying is that Roddick and Hewitt overachieved?

holdserve , 7/12/11 9:44 PM

Hewitt cannot be called int he same league as Ferrer or davydenko. Even Roddick was not a great player. Hewitt is greatly underestamated on this site.
Why Roddick does not get more credits? He had one thing the others did not have. A real weapon.

I've noticed that there are a lot of people here claiming so much knowledge about tennis and the history buit they show they have not actually seen those players play and can not in retrospect think what they actually accomplished. Maybe if you look at the results of Wikipedia then you come to some conclusions of how they performed But if you actually have seen Hewitt in his prime you know that his spirit was unmatched in tennishistory. If you put statements like overachieved on Hewitt then clearly the knowledge about tennis must be questioned. Everything those players won was not stolen. But earned the hard way.
They were actually hard done buy because without TMF they woulde have fitted quit easily the rule of three. LOL

Davydenko is an old player. But, too old player Davydenko > Heyday Nadal. right?

And, Roger >>> Davydenko.

Fed > Davy > Rafa; but Rafa>>> Fed! So??

luckystar , 7/14/11 6:15 PM

so we are having fun with inequalities here??? :D

fed>rafa>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>davydenko

vrael , 7/14/11 7:14 PM

So the answer is: 17:8 >> 6:4. Not forgetting one guy having something like these: 16:12; 12:4; 6:3; 6:2...and so on, owning all the top ten guys and all active slam winners! He's the only one who proudly owns such record, not Fed, not Nole and not Murray.
