    7/11/11 12:36 AM | Kelli DeMario
Monfils, Melzer lead field at Mercedes Cup Gael Monfils will make his return to the ATP World Tour, after helping France to a 4-1 quarterfinal victory over Germany in Davis Cup. The Frenchman is set to lead a field of 32 players in Stuttgart, Germany.

World No. 7 Gael Monfils returns to clay-court competition for the second week of July, following a successful Davis Cup effort against Germany. The 24-year-old, who reached the Mercedes Cup final a year ago, won a his singles rubber to give France a critical 2-0 advantage over the weekend.

Monfils is 19-7 overall for the 2011 season. Prior to Davis Cup, the Frenchman made the third round at Wimbledon, before falling to Lukasz Kubot in four sets.

The World No. 7 leads the top half of the draw that includes: (3) former champion Mikhail Youzhny, (5) Florian Mayer and (7) Andreas Seppi. Other participants in his section are Victor Hanescu, Mischa Zverev, Sergiy Stakhovsky, Philipp Petzschner Marcel Granollers and former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Monfils is scheduled to begin his run against veteran Hanescu. The nearest seed to the Frenchman is Mayer, who looks to be a likely quarterfinal-round challenger. Should the seeded players progress through the draw, Monfils will face former title-winner Youzhny in the semifinal.

Second seed Jurgen Melzer has been placed in the same half as (4) Gilles Simon, (6) Nikolay Davydenko and (8) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Additional competitors in the bottom half include: 2010 champion Albert Montanes, Fabio Fognini, Pablo Andujar, Radek Stepanek, Jeremy Chardy and Lukasz Kubot.

The World No. 12 is slated to commence his effort against Santiago Giraldo in the opening round.
