The Bryan Brothers come through again in doubles and extend the Americans' Davis Cup tie against Spain. Now Mardy Fish will look to keep it going when he takes on David Ferrer in reverse singles.
Spain's commanding lead in its Davis Cup quarterfinal tie against the United States dwindled to 2-1 after Bob and Mike Bryan defeated Marcel Granollers and Feliciano Lopez 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in Saturday's doubles rubber.
The American victory sets the stage for what could be a dramatic Sunday in Austin, Texas. Facing a must-win situation, Mardy Fish is taking on David Ferrer while Lopez and Andy Roddick are waiting in the wings for what would be a live fifth rubber if Fish prevails earlier in the day.
In Friday's singles action, Lopez outlasted Fish 8-6 in the fifth and Ferrer rolled over Roddick in straight sets.
"We came here with a job to do to get three points and we have one, so I think the math is pretty easy to do," USA captain Jim Courier noted. "I think the matchups for us are good for tomorrow. I’m probably happier with the matchups than on Friday."
Courier has a point. Fish has been on fire over the past 12 months but he ran into an opponent who can match him serve for serve on a fast indoor hard court. Roddick, meanwhile, went up against one of the best returners in the game and not even the surface could save him from playing right into Ferrer's hands.
Fish and Ferrer have squared off on seven previous occasions and the head-to-head series is 4-3 in Fish's favor. The deadlock was broken earlier this season when the American scored a 7-5, 6-2 victory on the hard courts of Miami. Based on Friday's performances, however, don't be surprised if Ferrer gets revenge in four tight sets.
Should Fish get the win, Roddick-Lopez looks like a toss-up. Lopez just hammered the world No. 10 in straight sets at Wimbledon, but Roddick still leads their series 7-1 and he is playing at home in Austin.

Ferrer is locked in battle with Fish for more than 3 hours. Up 2-1 and up a break. He just has to keep his nerve. I think Mardy's served very well in the first three sets.
