The US decision to lay down an ultra-fast - and controversial - indoor hardcourt looks to be backfiring as visiting Spain ignored the disadvantages to take a 2-1 lead over the 32-times Davis Cup champions in Texas.
Even hometown Andy Roddick, now motoring as the second-best American player behind Mardy Fish, admitted things looked bleak for any chance at a winning weekend in their World Group quarter-final.
“Obviously it’s an uphill battle,” said the former No. 1 who now stands 10th. “We’re not going to be the favorites down 0-2. But we’re not out of this.” The US team has since won their doubles rubber courtesy of Bob and Mike Bryan.
Even without the resting Rafael Nadal Spain shrugged off the inconvenience of the court to produce the lead. “Of course, this is not our best surface,” said Spanish captain Albert Costa. "We would never choose this surface at home.
"But our guys are very good, they can play on all kind of surfaces."
The US will have to cast back into ancient tennis history for the last time it managed a comeback from 0-2 down - against Australia in 1934.
