Serbia leads Sweden 2-0 in the Davis Cup quarterfinals after the first day of action on Friday. With Novak Djokovic on the sidelines, Viktor Troicki and Janko Tipsarevic earn singles victories.
Viktor Troicki d. Michael Ryderstedt 6-3, 6-1, 6-7(6), 7-5
Troicki got defending champion Serbia off to a strong start against host Sweden, as he prevailed after two hours and 49 minutes on Friday afternoon. This one provided the only real suspense of the day, with Ryderstedt battling back well after winning only four total games in the first two sets.
The world No. 297 forced a tiebreaker in the third and took it eight points to six. With momentum in hand, Ryderstedt led by a break in the fourth and served for it at 5-4. At that point, however, Troicki woke up and raised his level when it mattered most. The 16th-ranked Serb broke for 5-5 then ended the match with another break in the 12th game of the set.
Janko Tipsarevic d. Ervin Eleskovic 6-2, 1-0
Citing a knee injury, Wimbledon champ Novak Djokovic decided not to play the second singles rubber on Friday. It mattered little, as Tipsarevic had a short day at the office against Eleskovic. The world No. 355 retired after one game in the second set due to a knee issue of his own.
Tipsarevic, in complete control when it ended prematurely, provided the second point for the visitors. A victory in the doubles rubber on Saturday would put Serbia back in the semifinals and two wins away from repeating as Davis Cup champions.

I don't get it. He rested his knee yesterday but plays doubles today. They should have known Sweden has a good doubles team and hence they lost anyway. Does that mean Nole plays singles tomorrow or can he after withdrawing 40 minutes prior to the start yesterday?
numero , 7/9/11 8:45 PM
Simon Aspelin and Robert Lindstedt beat Djokovic and Zimonjic 6-4, 7-6 (5), 7-5.
nadline , 7/9/11 10:53 PM
The captain can substitute Djokovic for either of the players in the 3rd or 4th singles. If 3rd, one hour before. If substitution for 4th singles then not more than 10 mins after completion of third singles match.
Clearly, Djokovic will play the 4th singles if the third singles is lost.

it would be anti-climactic if nole sustains an injury.. people want a new star in him for various reasons (from the sublime to the ridiculous)
raghav , 7/9/11 11:28 PM
Even if he is injured he has plenty of time to recover before summer hardcourt Masters. Don't forget Rafa is injured. I think he has been carrying this foot injury from before French Open. In one match at FO, he removed the heavy tapes from his foot to play better. At that time, it was explained that he had blisters. Now I think it was a foot injury not revealed for not losing psychological advantage.
When Murray played with a bum ankle, Rafa said that it was OK, he has also played with pain and should be ok as you go deeper into the tournament. I asked Cheryl at that juncture whether Rafa was referring to an actual injury to himself. But no one knew what exactly he was referring to.
holdserve , 7/9/11 11:39 PM
Holdserve/ You are just making a fool of yourself.
Rafa indeed explained about the foot injury but he was talking about Murrays ankle. He actually had the addocity to explain to us thepeople that Murray was not injured! Foulplay RAFA !
Instead he kept on speaking about his hairline...............fracture . We all knew what that was all about. Baldy was covering because he felt like he was not gonna win this tournemant. He always does.
Sienna , 7/10/11 1:35 AM
I'm sorry, Rafa did not talk about any hairline fracture. It's the media that made up the story. Get your facts right and stop accusing Rafa. It's sad that some people have to spend all their time talking negative things about one guy, these same people must be so bored with life and couldn't find any meaning in their lives. I truly pity such people!
luckystar , 7/10/11 1:57 AM
Of course he didnot/ He never talks about what is going on. First he lets the team have a go at the pitch.
Then he gives a half hartened pressconference when that is done everything turns out to be a language issue. Later on we correct the bulls in the hispanic.
Sienna , 7/10/11 2:18 AM
Sorry sienna you're wrong again. Neither Rafa nor his team talked publicly about any hairline fracture, whether in English or in Spanish. The only statement they gave was the one where they denied that there's any hairline fracture after the media made a fuss about this story without even confirming anyhing with the Nadal camp. You seem to think that Rafa and his team are responsible for what the media chooses to speculate, just like youself, who chooses to be a self appointed Rafa basher with all your fanciful speculations.Being a Fed fanatics, you're doing all these at the detriment of your, Fed's and other Fed fans' reputation. Time to rethink what damage you're done to Fed's reputation, for having a fan like you.

luckystar, 7/10/11 3:08 AM
Sorry to butt in here but Roger's reputation has nothing to do with anything his fans say. The same applies to any other player's reputation regarding their fans ; it's a totally separate issue.
numero , 7/10/11 4:10 AM
Roger and his reputation got damaged a long time ago by Roger himself and his Fedtards like Numero, Sienna, Chr18, Sexan, SenorPlaid, Youdude and the like. That said, Despite how arrogant and sore Fed can be, such a great achiever never deserves pathetic fans like these guys. All they do is attack the one player who has got the better of Fed over his entire career. Shows you that once a person is a sore and bitter loser, they will always remain so. They just can't accept reality.
Go get a life guys. Rafa is out of your league. You don't deserve to even mention his name. You will never acheive what he has and you will never be a fraction of the person he is despite whatever lies you fancy making up. The more you post negative things about him, the more you reveal how pathetic and bitter you are towards Rafa. And that makes me quite pleased because that implies that at the back of your deranged minds, you know very well that Rafa always got the better of Fed despite the surface, despite the age difference, despite Rafa never going to an academy and Fed accusing him of being one-dimensional, etc, etc....I could go on!
jean , 7/10/11 5:12 AM
Sorry but it doesn't relate to a player's reputation anything that his fans say. I don't hold anything against Rafa for having such a vindictive fan like yourself jean. I doubt any poster here is paid by a player to be their publicist or propaganda spreader. Are you?
numero , 7/10/11 5:33 AM
I'm in a generous mood so apology accepted.
jean , 7/10/11 6:39 AM
Hey " numero " why is your username meaning " number " in "SPANISH" you must be a """"NADAL"""" Fan..is that right? (^_^) good for you, you do know once you register with that name or anything else it can't be changed...So good on yah...fellow nadal fan
Prime , 7/10/11 9:17 AM
número, it makes one question what kind of fans a player like Federer attracts. It seems to me that Fed is able to attract some or even many bitter fans, who can't stand any other players threatening Fed's legacy, who only think the world of Fed but nohing of other players and hence can't accept the fact that Federer is no longer the top man in his own trade and that some
other younger players may end up being greater than Federer. Bitter pill to swallow for many Fed supporters, I understand, sienna being one prime example.
luckystar , 7/10/11 9:49 AM
Seems like Fedal are still the only game in town. This thread is about Djokovic and the Serbian DC team, inevitably it's ended up as a war of words between Fedfans and Rafans.
Sienna, please read the following - the hairline fracture story came from Neil Harman of The Times not from Nadal or his team:
"Well, this story is getting mucked about with, isn?t it? After tennis.com and Neil Harman of The Times both reported on Sunday that Rafael Nadal is suffering from a hairline fracture to his foot and could miss up to six weeks of tennis, Rafa?s PR guy Benito Perez-Barbadillo tweeted this statement on Monday:"
"Just to be clear: Rafa doesn?t have a fracture and he won?t be off 6 weeks. holidays & July 16th will play a golf tournament in Mallorca."

I think they just wanted Nole to play a match for this tie. He was clearly hampered in his movement, didn't run down some shots and lobs that he normally would've. I don't know whether that was just precautionary or whether something was bothering him.
mriiidula , 7/10/11 12:11 PM
Yeah, I think he wanted to play a bit so in case he is needed to play in the fourth singles, he would have had match practice.
If Serbia loses third singles which is highly unlikely, then Nole will play the fourth and he will take painkillers and play at the top of his form. I think his commitment to the team is such that hobbled or not, he will give his best in a crunch situation.
holdserve , 7/10/11 5:10 PM
Serbia has won 4-1. So Djokovic was not needed.
