Serbia still leads its Davis Cup tie against Sweden 2-1 despite dropping the doubles rubber on Saturday. Janko Tipsarevic can put his country in the semis with a victory over Michael Ryderstedt in reverse singles action.
Sweden stayed alive in its Davis Cup quarterfinal tie against Serbia with a straight-set doubles victory on Saturday. Simon Aspelin and Robert Lindstedt dealt Novak Djokovic a rare defeat by prevailing 6-4, 7-6(5), 7-5 over the world No. 1 and his partner, Nenad Zimonjic.
Still, the stage is set for Serbia to finish the job on Sunday in reverse singles. The defending champions lead 2-1 and can clinch a spot in the semis when Janko Tipsarevic faces Michael Ryderstedt.
With Robin Soderling unavailable this weekend, Ryderstedt is only relevant singles player on the Swedish roster. He comes in at No. 297 in the world and the owner of six career ATP match wins. Ryderstedt is still searching for his first victory of this season, but he at least managed to extend Viktor Troicki to four competitive sets on Friday.
Tipsarevic had an easy time at the office during the first day of singles. The world No. 29 led Ervin Eleskovic 6-2, 1-0 when the Swede retired due to a knee injury. Tipsarevic is now a solid 27-14 for his 2011 campaign.
Ryderstedt has home-court advantage and his performance on Friday was encouraging, so an upset is not entirely out of the question. Still, Tipsarevic should put an end to the tie after four sets. If it goes to a fifth rubber, Troicki is scheduled to go up against Eleskovic.
