Three-time finalist Argentina advanced to the Davis Cup semifinal, having completed a comprehensive 5-0 defeat of Kazakhstan this weekend. Doubles team Juan Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank sealed the victory on Friday.
Three-time Davis Cup runner-up Argentina issued a strong statement to the rest of the field, having ousted visiting Kazakhstan 5-0 over the weekend. Beginning with singles wins from both Juan Monaco and Juan Martin Del Potro, Argentina carried a key 2-0 advantage into Friday’s doubles rubber.
Juan Ignacio Chela and partner Eduardo Schwank put Argentina through to the semifinal at 3-0, after dismissing Evgeny Korolev and Yuriy Schukin in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.
Completing the sweep on Saturday were Chela and Monaco, who earned points four and five over respective opponents Korolev and Mikhail Kukushkin.
“At the end of the day everything was easier than expected. Definitely we’re looking forward to playing in the semifinals. I think it will be against last year’s champions, Serbia, and we’ll see if we can give a surprise and get closer to what we want, that is to win the Davis Cup one day,” explained captain Modesto “Tito” Vazquez.
Argentina will face either Sweden or defending champion Serbia for a spot in the final. The tie is slated to commence in September.
