Novak Djokovic will be back in action this weekend for Davis Cup play, just five days after winning the Wimbledon title. Djokovic and the defending champ Serbs are set for a quarterfinal meeting with an undermanned Swedish squad.
Novak Djokovic is no stranger to bouncing back in a hurry for the sake of his country.
Last summer, he lost the U.S. Open final to Rafael Nadal then led Serbia to a Davis Cup semifinal win over the Czech Republic one weekend later. This time, Djokovic is contesting a Davis Cup quarterfinal clash against Sweden just five days after capturing his first Wimbledon title.
The Serbs, who beat France in the 2010 championship tie, should have no trouble making a return trip to the semis. Their team is loaded with Djokovic, Viktor Troicki, Janko Tipsarevic, and Nenad Zimonjic. Troicki joined Djokovic in the hero role last fall by winning the cup-clinching singles victory over Michael Llodra.
Sweden, on the other hand, is nowhere near full strength. Robin Soderling is skipping the tie, so the Swedes will turn to an unheralded foursome of Michael Ryderstedt, Ervin Eleskovic, Simon Aspelin, and Robin Lindstedt. Aspelin and Lindstedt are well-respected doubles players, but Ryderstedt and Eleskovic register at No. 297 and No. 355 in the ATP singles rankings, respectively.
The doubles rubber should provide the only suspense of this weekend's tie. Serbia has to play on the road, but it will almost certainly get the job done in no more than four rubbers.
