• Monaco, Del Potro open Davis Cup bid on Thursday

  Singles competitors Juan Monaco and Juan Martin Del Potro will be in action against opponents Andrey Golubev and Mikhail Kukushkin on Thursday. Both nations look to win critical singles rubbers heading into the weekend.

  World No. 43 Juan Monaco leads Andrey Golubev 2-0 in the series, as the players begin the Davis Cup quarterfinal. The two have met twice on clay this season, with the Argentine winning four of 5 sets contested.
  
  Monaco enters the tie with a modest 13-16 season record. The 27-year-old looks to regroup after suffering back-to-back, opening-round losses at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He is 3-5 lifetime in Davis Cup singles play, having participated in six ties since 2004.
  
  World No. 45 Andrey Golubev is 4-18 for the 2011 season. The 23-year-old will attempt to win his first match since March, when he reached round two at Indian Wells. Thursday marks his eighth tie for Kazakhstan.

  Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Mikhail Kukushkin
  
  World No. 19 Juan Martin Del Potro makes his long-awaited Davis Cup return with a 34-9 record this year. The 22-year-old advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon, where he fell in four sets to Rafael Nadal. He is twice a title winner in 2011, having put together championship victories in Delray Beach and Estoril.
  
  World No. 67 Mikhail Kukushkin is 6-13 for the season. The 23-year-old, set to play his 8th tie for Kazakstan, looks to win his first match since mid-June, when he made the round of 16 at Eastbourne.
  
  Prediction: Del Potro in straight sets.
