John Isner and Tommy Haas successfully opened their bids at the Tennis Hall of Fame with first round wins on Tuesday.
John Isner def. Karol Beck 6-3, 6-2
After a somewhat disappointing showing at Wimbledon this year, with a second round loss to Nicolas Almagro, John Isner rebounded nicely in Newport with an easy straight set win over Slovakia’s Karol Beck.
The match lasted just over an hour with 10 aces from Isner’s racket. But more amazing that Isner’s aces were the match 10 double-faults from Beck. The American secured 3 breaks of Beck’s serve while fighting off 2 service breaks on his own serve.
Isner will take on Arnaud Clement, the French veteran in the second round.
Tommy Haas def. Michael Berrer 7-6(9), 6-4
On Tuesday, German veteran Tommy Haas won his first ATP match of the year. Haas spent most of 2010 and the first half of 2011 out with hip and shoulder surgeries. The first set was a struggle for both men, with a single service break each to force a tiebreaker.
The drama in the match occurred in the breaker. Berrer tossed in 3 double faults in the tiebreak alone and squandered several set points on his own serve before Haas finally took the set 11-9. Haas secured the only break of the second set to win in straight sets.
