Australia looks to be ready with the Davis Cup lineup of the generations when 30-year-old Lleyton Hewitt teams with teenaged Bernard Tomic in this weekend's Asian zonal Davis Cup tie against China.
The combination has been a dream for several years, ever since Tomic came onto the scene as a raw talent. The 18-year-old finally proved himself on the big stage where he reached a Wimbledon quarter-final against Novak Djokovic.
Now, the veteran and the player for the future are set to line up in Beijing in singles rubbers. Australia needs to win to earn a berth in the World Group Playoff in September.
"Obviously it still means a lot otherwise I wouldn't be here," said Hewitt, who played Wimbledon on a foot injury and had his doubts about making it to China. "I'm rested and ready to go for the tie, what a great honour to be here for my second tie and I can't wait to play."
Davis Cup Captain Pat Rafter is keeping his final lineup under wraps, but is almost certain to include Hewitt and Tomic in the mix. "China play very well in Davis Cup and they had a very good win against Taiwan. I expect them to be very tough and a very disciplined team."
China best player ranks 409, a sharp contrast to the women's game where Li Na won the French Open.
