David Nalbandian will miss Argentina's Davis Cup quarter-final in Buenos Aires starting next Thursday with the veteran still trying to overcome the effects of groin surgery earlier this season.
As a result, the tie which begins a day early in Buenos Aires to accommodate national elections at the weekend, will force the hosts to go with Juan Martin Del Potro as de facto team leader against visiting Kazakhstan.
Del Potro, a loser to Rafael Nadal in the Wimbledon fourth round, dealt with injury problems in that match and is also still coming back fully from his 2010 wrist surgery.
The remainder of the host team will comprise Eduardo Schwank, Juan Ignacio Chela and Juan Monaco.
Argentine captain Modesto Vazquez called the Nalbandian absence "a serious loss. We were counting on David as a luxury."
"David has a very visible hematoma (blood bruise). The injury is associated with the last operation, " said the team doctor of the 29-year-old. Nalbandian has been in South America since going out in the Wimbledon third round to Roger Federer.
