Fifth seed Robin Soderling survived a difficult second-round match, where he rallied to a five-set success against former World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt. The Swede surrendered the first two sets, but regrouped to level the match. Soderling trailed 1-2 in the decider, then upped his effort to reach three match-points at 5-4. The World No. 5 closed the match as the Australian netted a forehand strike.

Soderling ended the day with 28 aces and 75 winners.

"You just have to start over, like trying to take one point at a time and see it as a new match; there's still a chance to win," said Soderling. "I didn't want to go off the court feeling that I didn't give a hundred per cent. Win or lose, doesn't matter.

"I tried not to think about the scoreline. Instead, I tried to keep looking forward. I know I was playing pretty well. I served well. And if I could just start to move a little bit better, start to return a little bit better than the first two sets, I knew I had a good chance."

He will take on either Igor Andreev or qualifier Bernard Tomic in the next round.

    Yen-Hsun Lu def. (13) Viktor Troicki 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-4
