Defending champion Rafael Nadal advanced to the third round of Wimbledon, taking out American Ryan Sweeting.
World No. 1 Rafael Nadal played his first-ever match under the new Wimbledon roof on Wednesday. With rain falling earlier in the day and more forecast for the afternoon, Wimbledon organizers took no chances, though the measure was ultimately unnecessary, as precipitation held off for the duration of the match.
The meeting with Sweeting was Nadal’s third of the year, with Nadal easily winning both encounters. Wednesday showed little improvement for the American. Nadal skated through the opening two sets without surrendering a break.
Sweeting managed to secure a break in the third set, but it was too little far too late for the American.
Nadal will have the benefit of playing Gilles Muller, who advanced over Milos Raonic when the Canadian got injured in the first set.

Here comes another turd...
Playing under the closed roof is a welcome oppurtunity for Rafa this early in the games. Who knows, it might rain during the finals...ooooops, one game at a time.

@sabs
if you are going to attack somebody at least try and spell correctly. dumbass...
eduardvalalex , 6/23/11 8:32 AM
phoenix,
I agree about getting used to playing under the roof. Rafa has never had to do it yet. He seemed to be comfortable and not have any problems with it! That's a good thing! He is looking great and getting better with each match. He seems so much more relaxed and happy than he was in that first week at RG.

@sabs, 6/23/11 6:45 AM
Rafa, an emotional human being, keep us ahead of robots 'Fed' !
Augustina08 , 6/23/11 9:23 AM
Oh, here's a little bit of math: if starting now, Rafa wins 12 consecutive GS matches, he will have won SIX of the last SEVEN Grand Slams. Impressive, right?
eduardvalalex , 6/23/11 9:46 AM
sabs should ask that question about Fed, at the AO 2008 and AO 2009, where Fed had to overcome Tipsy in a long five sets match in AO 2008 when Fed had mono, and Fed had to overcome Berdych in five sets under the hot sun in AO 2009. Why sabs didn't question whether Fed was a machine then? Or sabs already confirmed that Fed was a machine?
luckystar , 6/23/11 10:14 AM
@eduardvalalex,
Sorry for the Typo*.
Dumbass must be your..................!
sabs , 6/23/11 11:02 AM
Rafa, just repeat the AO 09....
tettylds , 6/23/11 11:37 AM
can anyone comment on the 3rd set?
Did Rafa drop serve or did Sweeting take it from him? he (Rafa) seemed to have things pretty much in the bag when I left...
Shireling , 6/23/11 12:54 PM
Shire, you said it yourself, he "seemed to have things pretty much in the bag..." so there's no harm in trying to do some experimenting and have a little practice time. Besides, didn't you know that he just love to give us mini heart attacks? :-)
phoenix , 6/23/11 1:33 PM
sabs you are right. Fed has inhuman energy and recuperative powers. Playing through mono. Never missing a slam. At age 30 still going strong. Is this humanly possible? But not clear how he could save you from muscular machines, when he himself is one. He has more muscles than Nadal.
holdserve , 6/23/11 1:36 PM
3rd set Rafa broke Sweeting's serve early on and was serving to consolidate the break when he himself was broken. I think he was 40-0 up when he was broken which suggested to me a loss in concentration. However, Sweeting has to be given credit because he was completely rejuvinated in the 3rd set, went for broke basically. I was thinking, why didn't he do that in the 1st and 2nd set?
What stood out for me was Rafa's excellent serve, he varied it and I especially liked the one out wide, really draws an opponent off court. Having said that Sweeting read this serve well a couple of times and produced some outstanding returns I thought, exceptional.
I feel very positive about Rafa's serve........I do not think a lot of players would have made some of the retrievals Sweeting made on those wide serves, he was just inspired.
But as is often the case, it was not good enough to give Rafa any trouble........I never felt he was in any trouble even when Sweeting broke back.
The Rafa-train chugs along nicely....................
Vamos!!!
rafaisthebest , 6/23/11 2:02 PM
You know the funny thing here. About 95% of the Rafans here were begging Roger to take out Nole (remember your "prayer" rafaisthebest?) in Paris and they were heaping praise on Roger for allowing Rafa to stay at #1 and not having to face Nole in the final where they thought for sure that Nole would win.
Now it's back to the same old "attack Roger" mode. I wonder if they'll be cheering for Roger this time around if he has the chance to block Nole's #1 takeover attempt again. I doubt they would fear Nole as much on grassin the final but Nole in the final would mean he's #1.
Please do Roger and his fans a favour and don't jump on the Fedexpress this time if Roger gets to the semifinal and then jump back off win or lose. If so you're being hypocritical as many of you have accused Fedfans of cheering for the players that can beat Rafa.
numero , 6/23/11 2:16 PM
For me, the most impressive bit of the match yesterday was when Rafa's ace was called a fault so he got his first serve again and served another ace on virtually the same spot..........genius.
nadline , 6/23/11 2:24 PM
número, please read sabs post first before jumping on rafafans. You're downright bias, why pick on rafafans but not your fellow fedfans when clearly your dear compatriot was the one who started all these. Rafafans merely respond to sabs post. If you can't stay objective, stop telling people off here.
I don't see rafafans begging Fed to beat Nole at RG. I'm happy somebody stopped Nole, don't care if it was Fed who did the job. As long as Nole didn't reach the final, at RG or Wimbledon, it's fine with me whoever beats him. The most important thing is still Rafa winning it all.
luckystar , 6/23/11 3:14 PM
im getting the feeling that rafa might be reaching that level again. The level when it's pretty much imposible to beat him. The form he showed at the us open last year. If this continues we should have our 3rd wimbly sewn up in no time
Nadalsdisciple , 6/23/11 3:29 PM
thx 'rafaisthebest' about your highlights of the match. I'm very grateful because I have not been able to see a replay. It is not so bad if he was serving to consolidate then. Like you say, a lapse of concentration :P
Thx 'nadline' about the info about the ace, you don't see that a lot!
You know what, I was actually dissapointed when Nole was beaten by Fed in RG, I had a feeeling that Rafa was going to make us proud (althouth it was nice to see him retain Nr. 1).
Shireling , 6/23/11 3:42 PM
Nole sailing through..
Hewitt 2 set up against Sod
Delpo 5-1 up in the 2nd set after losing the 1st's tie-break
Shireling , 6/23/11 3:55 PM
even though it might cause us to slip into 2nd place, i'd rather rafa plays nole in the final. Those 4 loses still hurt and need to be avenged. Vamos!!!!!!!!plus without anypoints to defend in the masters' in north america we should have the no1 spot back in no time. Really guys, is it just me or is rafa just hitting the ball harder than ever. I mean, its unreasonable to expect people to return those balls vamos!!!!
Nadalsdisciple , 6/23/11 4:14 PM
Fed fans seem so alike I think they might be multiple ids of one person.
Rafa's form does remind me of US Open. But too soon to read too much into it. Must wait at least till the semis. He certainly seems more confident almost as if he knows he has a secret weapon.
holdserve , 6/23/11 4:35 PM
In above post, I meant wait till at least the quarters.
holdserve , 6/23/11 4:41 PM
I always asked myself what is it with the players Rafa chooses to practice with and hit some shots. They suddenly become better and win their matches easily...Now Lu is doing great beating Troicki...what a success for him...
natashao , 6/23/11 4:42 PM

You are most welcome...............oh, forgot to mention Rafa's footwork........i'm still purring........
Nadalsdisciple

No, it is not just you...................I have the same feeling that Rafa is getting his groove back!! Yay.........I did not want to say anything in case my brain was playing tricks on me...........nice to know someone else out there has the same vibe......
numero
, 6/23/11 2:16 PM
numero, no I have not forgotten my prayer, nor have I gone back on my word........I have not said, let alone thought, a single bad word against your dearly beloved, Fed. His game, however, is another matter, I never promised not to trash that if he plays tosh...........Am I going to offer another prayer for Fed to beat Nole should they meet in the semis? Nah........this time, not even divine intervention will protect Fed from a lashing........Nole has revenge on his mind. GUARANTEED.
And our Rafa will be waiting in the final.......................salivating...............
Vamossss!!!!! !!!!!!!!
rafaisthebest , 6/23/11 5:00 PM
Rafaisthe best..Im backing you in picking Nole over Fed..I have a strong feeling hell beat Fed..it may go to 4 or 5 I dont know but I think he will upset Fed
Key matches for Rafa : Delpo and Murray..expect Rafa to be very nervous in these 2..
sanju , 6/23/11 8:22 PM
Even though Berdych looks to be in great form..I think Rafa will manage to take care of him..
sanju , 6/23/11 8:24 PM
sanju,
I don't know about Rafa being nervous facing Delpo again. He did beat him in the semis at IW on hard court. This is grass, where Rafa is very comfortable and Delpo isn't.
Nativenewyorker , 6/23/11 8:30 PM
Yes NNY I know it will be in the back of his mind but am sure Rfa will be nervous..I am not saying he will lose, I think he will be nervous though
It sure will be played in Centre court, so we are guaranteed the match will be played from start to finish and no breaks like Delpo has been enjoying of late
sanju , 6/23/11 8:40 PM
sanju,
Hopefully it will be a good kind of nervous then. The kind that brings out his best game. He has been looking very good in the early rounds, but there is always going to be a test. Muller could be the first. I don't know much about him, but have heard that he is a big server. He did beat Rafa in 2005, but this is not the same Rafa.
Rafa seems to thrive on challenges. It brings out his best. If he does meet Delpo, I think fitness could be a big key in the match. Delpo cannot outlast Rafa.
Nativenewyorker , 6/23/11 9:03 PM
I don't know about Nole beating Fed at Wimby...Federer is looking scary good and with so much confidence...Nole will have to play his best ever if he wants to beat this Roger...
natashao , 6/23/11 9:08 PM
I don't see Nole beating Roger at Wimbledon either Natashao. He's playing WAY better than he did last year.
cherylmurray , 6/23/11 9:52 PM
Next up DelPotro. C'mon Juan, you can do it. Let's see that huge FH make some music. There's none other like you to pummel the ball when you're in the zone. Go get 'em tiger!
scoretracker , 6/23/11 11:11 PM
Pathetic attempt to bait us Rafans! For a guy as you claimed to be, you sure quack like a duck. Maybe I should call you drake. :-)
phoenix , 6/24/11 12:43 AM
Since Sienna claims Federer is a chicken, maybe scoretracker wants to be a duck.
holdserve , 6/24/11 3:32 AM
phoenix and holdserve, be thankful there's some moderation here, or else I'd tell you both what you need to do.
scoretracker , 6/24/11 3:56 AM
scoretracker, doubt if Depot can take more than a set off Rafa. On grass he reminds me of a fish on a bicycle...it just ain't right......
