There was never any doubt for John Isner that the warmed-over 2011 version of their first-round marathon from 2010 would never live up to the hype.
With the 11-hour marathon from the Wimbledon first round of a year ago still fresh in the memory, the American just knew the sequel would fail to excite.
That was the case as the big man won over his French opponent - and now his friend - Nicolas Mahut in three sets. It took a mere two hours on the grass.
Isner also knew his opponent came to the court in less than perfect condition. "I think his knee was bothering him a little bit, to be honest. Maybe he wasn't a hundred percent. I definitely didn't want to play him first round because one of us was going to go home a loser. And I think both of us could do well or can do well at this event.
"Really, it stinks for him that he's out now."
Isner said that no one could realistically believe that their re-match could be anything special. "Nothing's going to live up to that (2010) match. It wasn't going to go that long."
