  • Federer looks to go one step further at Wimbledon

    6/20/11 10:40 PM | Ricky Dimon
Federer looks to go one step further at Wimbledon Roger Federer is coming off a runner-up finish at the French Open as he heads to the All-England Club and seeks his seventh Wimbledon title. Federer is in a section of the draw that also features David Ferrer, John Isner, and Nicolas Mahut.

Rarely does a Grand Slam quarterfinal finish qualify as a disappointment, but that was exactly the case for Roger Federer last year at Wimbledon. Having reached the championship match in the seven previous seasons while winning the title on six of those occasions, Federer got bounced by Tomas Berdych prior to the final weekend.

The third-ranked Swiss is back for redemption, and he is playing the kind of tennis that makes a return to glory seem very possible. Federer is just 34-8 for his 2011 campaign--modest by his standards--but he finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the French Open. In the process, Federer ended Novak Djokovic's undefeated season with an epic four-set semifinal victory.

Presumably reinvigorated with two full weeks of rest, Federer finds himself in a relatively friendly section of the Wimbledon draw. The next highest-ranked player in his quarter of the bracket is David Ferrer, who is capable of success on grass but is far more dangerous on clay courts. Other possible quarterfinal opponents for the No. 3 seed include Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Federer should have no trouble breezing through his first two matches even though he generally heats up later rather than sooner in major tournaments. His initial test--and perhaps only test prior to the quarterfinals--could come in the form of David Nalbandian in the third round. Nalbandian is a former Wimbledon runner-up, but he has been slowed by injuries throughout the latter stages of his career.

With Federer expected to cruise, the big story in this section--for now--is the John Isner vs. Nicolas Mahut rematch. One year after playing the longest match in tennis history (11 hours and five minutes), Isner and Mahut will once again be going head-to-head in the first round. Mahut will be looking for revenge after falling 70-68 in the fifth set when they square off in a highly-anticipated Tuesday showdown.
