Jo-Wilfried Tsonga wins his Eastbourne opener on Tuesday. Tsonga is joined in the second round by Somdev Devvarman, who polished off his match against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
(1) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga d. Denis Istomin 6-2, 7-5
Tsonga played just over 24 hours after finishing runner-up to Andy Murray at Queen's Club, but he had little difficulty with Istomin in the AEGON International first round on Tuesday. The No. 1 seed needed one hour and 30 minutes to set up a marquee second-round matchup against Radek Stepanek.
Showing no signs of fatigue, Tsonga raced to a 4-0 lead in the first set. Istomin finally got on the scoreboard with a pair holds but never got any closer because he missed all four of his break-point chances. After exchanging one break each en route to a 5-5 tie in the second, Tsonga's fourth break of the afternoon sealed the match's fate.
Somdev Devvarman d. (4) Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-4
Just two games and two service holds were required to end this clash, which had been suspended with Devvarman ahead 6-3, 5-3 on Monday night. Garcia-Lopez came back out on Tuesday and took care of his serve, but Devvarman finished things off in style one game later and booked a spot in round two against Julien Benneteau.
India's No. 1 player has never been a standout on grass, yet he fired seven aces and fought off nine of 10 break points. Devvarman was simply far better at crucial moments than the Spaniard, as he converted all three of his break opportunities. Garcia-Lopez, who is 1-2 against Devvarman in 2011, won only 11 of 25 second-serve points.
