  • Berlocq takes out Dolgopolov in Eastbourne first round

    6/14/11 5:13 AM | Ricky Dimon
Berlocq takes out Dolgopolov in Eastbourne first round Carlos Berlocq pulls off an upset on the first day of main-draw action in Eastbourne, ousting Alexandr Dolgopolov. Berlocq advances to the second round along with Julien Benneteau.

    Carlos Berlocq d. (2) Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-5, 6-2

The AEGON International lost one of its marquee players on Monday when Dolgopolov went down to Berlocq in straight sets. The No. 2 seed should have had a surface advantage playing on grass, but he had no answer against the Argentine clay-courter in this one. Dolgopolov dropped serve five times and won only 36 percent of the points in which he had to toss in a second delivery.

A late break in the first set--Berlocq's second of the day--decided it and from there Dolgopolov could not recover. Berlocq dropped his own serve once in the second, just as he had done in set one, but he had no trouble abusing his opponent's serve to the tune of three more breaks. The world No. 69 wrapped up his effort with six aces and he now finds himself in a bottom quarter of the draw that features no seeded players.

    Julien Benneteau d. Ryan Sweeting 6-2, 7-6(4)

Benneteau served at 68 percent and held nine of 10 service games to dismiss Sweeting and reach the Eastbourne second round on Monday. The Frenchman had an easy time of things in the first set, during which he surrendered only six points on serve. Two breaks were more than enough for Benneteau to take it in routine fashion.

Sweeting raised his level in set two and traded breaks to force a tiebreaker. The American, who won a clay-court title in Houston two months ago, fell behind early in the 'breaker and could not get back on track. Benneteau rolled through it seven points to four and he awaits either Somdev Devvarman or No. 4 seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Devvarman leads that match 6-3, 5-3 (suspended due to darkness).
