    UNICEF Open- Baghdatis advances, Almagro falls to Berrer Former semifinalist Marcos Baghdatis reached the second round at the UNICEF Open, following his straight-set win against veteran Arnaud Clement. The Cypriot is joined by Michael Berrer, who upset top seed Nicolas Almagro.

    (2/WC) Marcos Baghdatis def. (Q) Arnaud Clement 7-6(4), 6-3

    Second seed Marcos Baghdatis made a successful start to the tournament, having ousted veteran Frenchman Arnaud Clement on Monday. The 25-year-old tallied seven aces and 3 service breaks, through to a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory in 95 minutes. By virtue of the opening-round win, Baghdatis moves to 10-13 for the season.

    He is slated to take on either Robin Haase or Mischa Zverev for a spot in the quarterfinal.

    Michael Berrer def. (1) Nicolas Almagro 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4

    Veteran Michael Berrer is through to the second round, after upsetting top seed Nicolas Almagro in three sets. The 30-year-old German trailed by a set, but rallied through to a 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 victory in an hour and 38 minutes. Berrer, who withstood 15 aces from Almagro, held fourteen of 15 service games during the match.

    He will face either Santiago Giraldo or Michael Russell in the next round.
