  • Swedish captain Enqvist may have to take the court

    6/13/11 7:55 PM | Johan Lindahl
Swedish captain Enqvist may have to take the court The Davis Cup absence of Robin Soderling may force retired captain Thomas Enqvist to step into the breach for the Davis Cup quarter-final tie next month against holder Serbia.

World No. 5 Soderling has pronounced himself in need of a rest and time to heal a foot injury as the season takes a toll.

With the national No. 2 Michael Ryderstedt ranked a distant 308th, there seems to be little choice for Enqvist, winner of 19 titles and the 1999 Australian Open finalist. The 37-year-old retired almost five years ago but will have to suit up to save Davis chances for one of the game's former superpowers. The tie will be played in southern Halmstad, July 8-10.

Enqvist still keeps his tennis tuned by playing on the senior circuit; he ended his Davis Cup career with a 15-10 mark, playing finals in 1996 and 1997.

"It's very disappointing not to have Robin in the team this time and it reduces our chances to reach the semi final," said the captain. "But he has always been loyal to Davis Cup duty and I see this as a one-off event.

"Now we can really see where the other players stand and they will have the opportunity to play world-class players at home."

This amuses me ever-so-slightly. I keep imagining Guy Forget dusting off the racquet...

Swedish tennis in a sorry state.

Djokovic is not playing either, most likely.
