Lleyton Hewitt is changing the habits of a tennis lifetime by playing a tournament the week before a Grand Slam, with the Australian scratching for ranking points on grass at Eastbourne.
Last week's failure to defending his grass title in Halle, Germany, caused the two-time grand Slam champion to fall out of the ATP Top 100 from his previous 73rd.
The 2002 Wimbledon winner has traditionally used private practise to fine-tune before the grass-start at the All England club, but that will change with Hewitt now required to rise in the rankings to start gaining tournament entries.
The veteran is still trying to find the balance in his game after March foot surgery and a three-month pause from the courts. The last time Hewitt played an event before Wimbledon was his title-winning year nearly a decade ago, when he won one on grass in the Netherlands before arriving in London and lifting Wimbledon honours over Argentine David Nalbandian.
Hewitt went out in Halle in the quarter-finals to eventual title-holder Philipp Kohlschreiber. "I didn't come here with any expectations and it's been nice to get some matches and feel comfortable on the grass," said the Australian.

It's good to know when to callit a day. Whilst I admire Hewitt for his perseverance, I'm sure he's earned stripes now to enable him to sit in a cosy studio and talk endlessly about tennis instead of slugging away on the tour getting nowhere fast. Many of the commentators never even made it into the top 100, Hewitt is a former World No 1 and GS winner.

Hewitt should just accept that his best days are behind him and retire. He cannot compete at the highest level anymore, he should just reserve his body so he will be able to play with his kids when he gets older
