  • Almagro leads field at UNICEF Open

    6/12/11 4:35 AM | Kelli DeMario
Almagro leads field at UNICEF Open The grass-court season continues as the ATP World Tour heads to 's-Hertogenbosch for the UNICEF Open. First-time participant Nicolas Almagro is set to top a field of 32 players.

World No. 15 Nicolas Almagro looks to regroup after a disappointing run at the French Open. The 25-year-old Spaniard failed to win a match at the Grand Slam, having fallen in the opening round to Lukasz Kubot in five sets.

Almagro is 31-10 entering into his first UNICEF Open, with clay-court titles captured in Costa Do Sauipe, Buenos Aires and Nice.

Almagro is located in the same half of the draw as (3) Xavier Malisse, (6) Adrian Mannarino and (7) Jeremy Chardy. Other competitors in the section include: Michael Berrer, Michael Russell, Santiago Giraldo, Nicolas Mahut, Julian Reister, Ricardo Mello, Filippo Volandri, Alex Bogomolov and wildcard Jesse Huta Galung.

The top seed is slated to open his bid against Berrer. The nearest seed to the World No. 15 is Mannarino, who looms as a possible quarterfinal-round opponent. Passage through the early rounds could set a semifinal meeting with veteran Malisse or Chardy.

Former semifinalist Marcos Baghdatis is slated to top the bottom half of the draw this week. The Cypriot has been placed in the same section as: (4) Ivan Dodig, (5) Jarkko Nieminen and (8) Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

Baghdatis will begin his effort against a qualifier in the opening round.
