  • AEGON International serves as tune-up for Wimbledon

AEGON International serves as tune-up for Wimbledon With Wimbledon just one week away, players will be looking to round into form over the coming days in Eastbourne. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Alexandr Dolgopolov, and Janko Tipsarevic headline a modest field.

The brief grass-court season makes its way to Eastbourne this week for the AEGON International, a 250-point event featuring top two seeds Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Alexandr Dolgopolov. Those two and the rest of a mediocre player list will use the tournament as preparation for Wimbledon, which begins next Monday.

Tsonga is in a state of limbo at the moment, so his status for this event could be up in the air. The 19th-ranked Frenchman is currently in the Queen's Club final against Andy Murray, but play was washed out on Sunday due to rain. By comparison, Philipp Kohlschreiber captured the Halle title on Sunday and pulled out of Eastbourne--presumably having gotten ample prep for the season's third Grand Slam.

Kohlschreiber's withdrawal could open the door for Dolgopolov in the bottom section of the draw. Now the only other two seeds in the second half are Spaniards Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Pablo Andujar. However, Dolgopolov is not completely in the clear, as a possible second-round clash against unseeded Lleyton Hewitt looms large.

Tsonga--if he remains in the bracket--faces a potentially tough path that begins with Denis Istomin. The No. 1 seed would likely run into Radek Stepanek in round two before a possible quarterfinal showdown against Sergiy Stakhovsky. Potential semifinal opponents for Tsonga in a more difficult top half include Janko Tipsarevic and Kevin Anderson.

One first-round matchup to watch is Tipsarevic against special exemption James Ward, an up-and-coming British hope. Ward got a wild card into Queen's Club last week and went all the way to the semifinals, upsetting Stanislas Wawrinka and Sam Querrey in the process.
