6/11/11 1:02 PM | Cheryl Murray
Andy Murray and Andy Roddick will meet for the tenth time on the lawns in London for a spot in the Queen’s Club final.
World No. 10 Andy Roddick has only ever managed to beat rival Andy Murray 3 times in their 9 meeting so far. The good news for the American is that one of those meetings came at Wimbledon in 2009. The two men met in the semifinals, Roddick won in a tight 4-setter.
Murray is playing better ball now than he was then though. The Scot is still ranked No. 4 in the world, but he comes into Queen’s off his best ever run at Roland Garros, where he lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Rafael Nadal. Roddick pretty much skipped the clay season all together.
Murray’s crafty play generally gives him the upper hand against Roddick, whose game relies more heavily on a big serve and coming into net. The Scot’s return game is also one of the best in the business; Roddick hit just 3 aces against Fernando Verdasco and still won in easy straight sets. If his serve is off at all against Murray, the American is done for.
Prediction – Murray in 3.

looks like Muzza is rolling over Roddick at the moment.

Just WOW! :)
deuce , 6/11/11 3:00 PM
This might be the best I've ever seen Muzz do on grass. EXCELLENT serving. Roddick doesn't stand a chance.
cherylmurray , 6/11/11 3:13 PM
This is a Master's class. well done to Murray.
cherylmurray , 6/11/11 3:16 PM
Woe! Rod wasn't bad, muzz just brilliant, cruised all the way through, everything in his game came together for one hour, no lapses or walkabouts, excellent serving, composed throughout, never pushed close to even a minor moan. And all with no more strain than a practice match.
Just hope he isn't peaking too soon.
alex , 6/11/11 3:29 PM
Sublime........Andy......hope you carry this form into Wimby.
rafaisthebest , 6/11/11 3:31 PM
well...that was quick. LOL.
cherylmurray , 6/11/11 3:33 PM
OMG Andy Murray! Playing like that no-one can beat you :)
alex...dare we dream? Yes WE CAN!
deuce , 6/11/11 3:34 PM
"Woe" above should of course read "Wow!" lol.
alex , 6/11/11 3:35 PM
Murray also played very well at 2009 Queens, winning it easily against Blake in the final. Yes Murray plays very well today, but Roddick isn't the Roddick of that 2009 Wimbledon anymore. Roddick has a problem when approaching the net, he doesn't know the right timing coming to the net and doesn't know how to cover his position when at the net. I'm impressed by Murray's ROS, he certainly read and anticipated Roddick's serves very well and returned so many of them that he puts so much pressure on Roddick's service game. Well done Murray. If Tsonga gets to the final, it should be an interesting final as Tsonga is serving very well here, and he's a lot quicker around the court and is also good at the net. Today's match looks a bit slow motioned compared to the Rafa/Tsonga match, probably because of Roddick's not so quick movement around the court.
luckystar , 6/11/11 3:39 PM
Yes lucky and I remember nasty remarks from people saying Andy wouldn't have won if he had been playing Roddick.
deuce , 6/11/11 3:42 PM
deuce, couldn't believe it. kept waiting for the lapses in concentration and service drops and they just didn't materialise. i could have watched that drinking tea in a room withut furniture! can't really dream yet cos that wasn't the muzz i know, lol.
alex , 6/11/11 4:00 PM
I remembered I was very impressed then by Murray, especially his footwork and his anticipatory skills. He seemed to be everywhere and no matter what ball Blake threw at him, he was there waiting for it, that's why I thought with Rafa's absence at Wimbledon, Murray had a good chance of reaching the final that year. I thought Roddick retired from his match against Blake at the Queens semifinal with some ankle problem, so I think none of us expect Roddick to do so well at Wimbledon that year. Too bad for Murray that year.
luckystar , 6/11/11 4:01 PM
lucky -
yep, muzz's SF loss to a-rod at wimbie that year was one of my biggest disappointments as a fan.
alex , 6/11/11 4:04 PM
alex, don't look back and enjoy THIS day :) Andy was hitting clean winners off Roddick's FIRST serve. A..m..a..zing! And did u c that drop shot from the baseline off a huge forehand? Even John Lloyd said it was "genius" and they even mentioned Fed in the same sentence...phew ;)
deuce , 6/11/11 4:16 PM
still enjoying it deuce. and did you see muzz's forehand right to the corner to set up the drop shop? and there must have been at least 3 cross-court forehand winners off powerful angled 1st serves, a-rod could only watch. and muzz's own service game was purring - 13 aces in 6 games and 1st serve firing ... doesn't get better :)
alex , 6/11/11 5:21 PM
AndyM could win the big W with this form.
holdserve , 6/11/11 5:58 PM
Great form shown by AndyM. Seems like we would again have a blockbuster
SF line up at Wimb and much more evenly matched. Sure nobody, would like
to play AndyM in this form.
fedexal , 6/11/11 6:04 PM
deuce and other AndyM fans rejoice! No one, not even Rafa or Roger can beat AndyM if he plays like this at W!
holdserve , 6/11/11 6:09 PM
Oh thank you for those words holdserve :) alex and I have done a lot of wishing and hoping...and daring to dream :)
Am wondering if Cahill is actually starting to have an effect, even part time and in such a short time. After all first RG semi.
deuce , 6/11/11 6:41 PM
Hey deuce and Alex, have you read Peter Bodo's Andy's Pity Party on tennis.com?
I think he has expressed a lot of what many of us have felt or said.
For instance: "I certainly hope Andy gets that major soon, although my rooting interest is always mild at best (sorry, it's professional reflex). That's less because I'd like to see a male British player win Wimbledon in the Open era (which I do) than because I find Murray to have what might be the rarest and best quality of all. He's. . . interesting. Simple as that. More interesting, to me, than his ATP betters. His game is interesting. His person is interesting. He may drive his fans mad, but they can't take their eyes off him and have no idea what he's likely to do next (in that sense, his fans aren't that different from we professionals)."
holdserve , 6/11/11 8:42 PM
Great piece by Richard Evans on Fox News:
?I?ve never seen Andy play better ? ever,? said coach Larry Stefanki. And he wasn?t talking about his man, Andy Roddick.
Stefanki had just watched Andy Murray produced a grass court performance that was as close to perfection as makes no difference to reach the final of the Aegon Championships with a 6-3, 6-1 demolition of Roddick, who has won this title four times in the past.
?The scary thing was that Andy (Roddick) didn?t play that badly,? Stefanki said. ?In the past he?s been outplayed by people like Roger Federer but hasn?t played well. Today he hardly did anything wrong. But Murray began with those two forehand cross court service returns to break and you think, ?Wait a minute, what?s happening here???
As the match unfolded, the answer became obvious. Murray, calm and in total control of his emotions in the sunshine, was doing exactly what he wanted with the ball and not missing.
?He has a similar grip to Federer?s, which means he can deal with the low slice better on this court, which sits low and was playing a little faster today; and my guy couldn?t do anything about it,? Stefanki said.
Roddick agreed.
alex , 6/11/11 11:50 PM
To be honest guys...Roddick's game hasn't improved since Stefanki became his coach. In fact, I think his game declined by alot. He's nowhere close to the top 5 players anymore but I feel his real problem is mental and that can be corrected by the right coach. If you watched his match against Muzz, the placement of his serves were nowhere near the T and so predictable; his serve used to be his deadliest weapon. Bottom line, A Rod needs a new coach and attitude.

jngannex -
I think you're being unfair on stefanki. If a-rod were to dispense with stefanki, he's just the kind of guy i'd love to see muzz get.
In the first few months after a-rod got stefanki there was huge improvement in his game - that culminated in him beating muzz to reach the 2009 wimbie final for the first time in 4 years, a title he'd never won even in his hay day. Then in 2010 a-rod won his first masters title in 6 years under stefanki. The guy's 29 this year and the fact that he's still around the top 10 seems quite an achievement to me. Another stat ... titles 2009-2010 under stefanki: 5. titles 2007-2008: 2.
alex , 6/12/11 2:41 PM
and it took less than 24 hours for folks to forget a-rod blowing verdasco off the court 6-2, 6-2.
There was nothing wrong with a-rod's game against muzz and despite what you say about his serving, he served very well even by his own high standards, getting an incredible 83% of his first serves in - something I've NEVER seen muzz come even close to!
The story yesterday was muzz playing brilliantly against very good grass court player, returning high quality sliced first serves from way off court with straight winners, and generally scoring winner after winner with virtully no UFEs.
A-rod did absolutely nothing for himself or his fans to be ashamed off - sometimes you meet an opponent in a purple patch - like muzz did in the oz final - and there's just nothing anyone could do to stop them.
alex , 6/12/11 3:28 PM
holdserve - yep, I did read the article and commented on it too. Like yourself, I liked the way it turned out and bodo does seem to have taking a bit of a liking to muzz.
BUT ... yet again he and his American compatriots just can't get over British journalists not getting over muzz!
Like I pointed out in a previous thread on here abtennis.com, they seem quite oblvivious to the disproportionate attention their own media give to roddick/isner/querrey/fish when playing in the same tournament and stages as much higher ranked players. Their patriotism is natural, understandable and commendable ... it's just the hypocrisy that rankles a bit.
My comment went something like ... "I just snapped you snapping the British media snapping muzz. See? We're all in the same game!"
alex , 6/12/11 3:44 PM
Hey deuce there's an article on Andy on the Barcelona page of sportshaze.com. What are your views about the statement that Andy is bound to win a couple of grand slams?
holdserve , 6/12/11 11:41 PM
holdserve, really enjoyed Bodo article. Thanx. He summed up many reasons why I love Andy. Yes, he is "interesting" and you never know what to expect from him on court, from the lows, going out to Boglomov, to the highs, Toronto last year and v. Roddick on Saturday. On song, for me there's no other player quite like him.
re slams, many pundits agree and so do I, IF he gets one slam he gets a lot more. He keeps knocking on that door, one of these days it will open :)
deuce , 6/13/11 7:58 AM
Hey deuce in addition to Bodo, I was referring to an article by a different author. There are tennis articles on the Barcelona page of sportshaze.com and a few of them recently are about AndyM. In one of them he/she says that AndyM is bound to win a couple of slam titles.
