Former finalist Philipp Kohlschreiber and fellow German Philipp Petzschner are through to the championship match at the Gerry Weber Open. The compatriots scored upset victories over top seeds Tomas Berdych and Gael Monfils.
Philipp Kohlschreiber def. (3) Gael Monfils 6-3, 6-3
World No. 49 Philipp Kohlschreiber advanced to the final, having upended third seed Gael Monfils Saturday afternoon. The 27-year-old German held nine consecutive service games, en route to a 6-3, 6-3 victory in an hour and 18 minutes. The Frenchman, who lost serve three times during the match, committed six double faults on the day.
"If there was something (key) today, then it was my first serve percentage, maybe the free points," said Kohlschreiber. "But as long as the ball was in the court, I think I did everything right. To keep the ball low, play with a lot of slice and then put on a bit more pressure in the right moment. That worked well and of course I’m happy that my tactics applied so well."
Philipp Petzschner def. (2) Tomas Berdych 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-3
World No. 71 Philipp Petzschner reached the Halle final by virtue of his three-set win against top seed Tomas Berdych. The 27-year-old German collected 15 aces and three service breaks, through to a 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-3 success in two hours and 19 minutes. With the semifinal-round victory, Petzschner is through to his first final since 2008.
