  • Murray overcomes Malisse, Nalbandian advances

    6/9/11 3:35 AM | Cheryl Murray
Murray overcomes Malisse, Nalbandian advances Britain’s own Andy Murray defeated Xavier Malisse in a tough 3-setter in front of his home crowd.

Andy Murray def. Xavier Malisse 6-3, 5-7, 6-3

Andy Murray had a strong start against big-hitting Belgian Xavier Malisse. The Belgian was lured into making too many mistakes in the opening set. Murray snagged an early break even though Malisse served at 76% for the set.

Malisse made a match of it in the second set. The Belgian continued to serve well, but he played better on the big points, staving off all 3 that Murray had against him. Malisse snatched a service break from Murray just as the Scot was serving to force a tiebreaker.

Murray got right back on track in the third. He got an immediate service break; the Scot got into trouble when he tried to consolidate the break, but he was able to serve his way out of 15-40 down. Murray moves into the round of 16 where he’ll play Janko Tipsarevic.

David Nalbandian def. Ilija Bozoljac 6-4, 6-4

Argentina’s David Nalbandian continued his winning ways on Wednesday with a straight set victory over Serbia’s Ilija Bozoljac. The Argentine is only just making his way back from an adductor injury that kept him sidelined throughout the clay court season this spring.

Nalbandian will take on No. 7 seed Fernando Verdasco in the round of 16.
