6/9/11 10:19 PM | Cheryl Murray
The No. 2 and 3 seeds posted straight-set wins to advance to the AEGON Championships quarterfinals on Friday.
Andy Murray def. Janko Tipsarevic 6-4, 7-6(3)
London resident Andy Murray secured a straight set win over Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic. The win was especially good for the Scot because Tipsarevic is a player with whom Murray has had difficulty in the past.
Tipsarevic enjoyed a break lead in both sets, but Murray’s return game proved to be too tough for the Serb. The second set in particular featured some excellent tennis from both players, with Murray just edging Tipsarevic in the tiebreaker. Great Britain’s top player will take on Croatia’s Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals.
Andy Roddick def. Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4
In this battle of the big servers, American Andy Roddick came out ahead. Roddick hit just 8 aces, but the American played well on the big points. He saved all 3 break points against his serve and converted 2 of 3 on Anderson.
The American seems to have found his groove after a dismal effort on the European clay. Roddick sat out completely from Roland Garros but he looks like he’s enjoying good grass court form heading into Wimbledon.
Roddick will play Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the quarters.
