Tournament seeds Tomas Berdych and Gael Monfils advanced to the second round of the Gerry Weber Open on Tuesday, having scored wins against respective opponents Ruben Bemelmans and Florent Serra.

Second seed Tomas Berdych overcame a slow start on Tuesday, having rallied to a three-set victory against qualifier Ruben Bemelmans. After taking the second-set tiebreak, the Czech broke to 2-0 in the deciding set. Berdych collected 10 aces en route to a 5-7, 7-6(8), 6-4 win in two hours and 16 minutes.
He is next to face compatriot Jan Hernych for a place in the quarterfinal. The Czech qualifier held on to defeat Sergiy Stakhovsky in the first round, 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(8).
(3) Gael Monfils def. (Q) Florent Serra 6-4, 6-3
Gael Monfils is through to the round of 16, after scoring a routine victory over fellow Frenchman Florent Serra. The 24-year-old crushed 14 aces through to a 6-4, 6-4 win in just 57 minutes of play. After securing the opening set, Monfils led 2-0 in the second. The third seed completed his effort without facing a break point during the match.
He will take on Ivan Dodig in the next round. The Croatian downed Pere Riba in the first round, 7-6(4), 7-6(6).
