English tennis hero Tim Henman shrugs off reports of a massive BBC payday for Wimbledon commentary.
One-time British great Tim Henman has mainly spent his retirement on the golf course, perfecting a game which is close to scratch. But the tennis millionaire does occasionally come out for work and will again be in the commentary box for the BBC during Wimbledon.
But the four-time semi-finlist at the All England club has had to deny that his pay packet for a fortnight will gross him around $330,000, a fairly healthy payday for a commentator whom few have called scintillating.
The ex-British No. 1 set the record straight with London's Daily Mail, saying that his fee is less than a quarter of the astronomical reported sum, the same as he made in 2010.
When the rumour was floated a few weeks ago, even Britain's TaxPayers’ Alliance weighed in, saying that public money - the BBC is funded by an annual licence fee paid by every television set owner - should not be wasted in such a fashion.
"I don’t want to be exact but it is actually less than a quarter of that and the same as last year," the Mail reported. "I try not to lose my sense of humour about things like this but this one was a bit irritating and as it’s license-payers’ money it’s only fair that people know it has been grossly exaggerated. I should be so lucky."
