Andy Murray’s victory over Juan Ignacio Chela sends the Scot into the semifinals with the rest of the top 4.
Andy Murray overcame a bum ankle, a poor start and a comeback from Juan Ignacio Chela to win his quarterfinal match in straight sets.
World No. 4 Andy Murray will be joining the best in the world in the French Open semifinals. Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal round out the semis, but Murray’s spot was in question when the Scot turned his ankle badly in his third round match against Michael Berrer.
Murray has revealed that his ankle is still stiff, and judging by his form in the first and second sets, the Scot was not feeling his best. Juan Ignacio Chela is a player Murray hasn’t lost to in 6 meetings, including the most recent 3 on clay. Still, Chela was able to storm out to a 4-1 lead before Murray earned a break back.
The Scot was able to snag the second break back at 5-5 to force a tiebreaker, and after playing from behind all set, Murray was finally able to take the lead.
With all of the momentum on his side of the court, Murray did to Chela what the Argentine did in the opening set; he raced out to a 2- break lead. Unfortunately for the Scot, he also surrendered both breaks back with a stretch of poor play and too many unforced errors. Murray was only just able to reign the match in just in time to secure a break at 5-5 to take a two-sets lead.
Murray finally took it to Chela in the third set, allowing the Argentine just two games en route to his straight set win.
The Scot will take on defending French Open champion Rafael Nadal in Friday’s semifinal.
