  • Fognini wins exhausting 5-set match amid controversy

    5/29/11 8:32 PM | Cheryl Murray
Fognini wins exhausting 5-set match amid controversy Italy’s Fabio Fognini came back from a 2 sets to 1 deficit to defeat Albert Montanes in a marathon more than 4 hour match.

Spain’s Albert Montanes appeared in full command of this fourth round match. Montanes enjoyed a 2 sets to 1 lead going into the fourth set, but the Spaniard seemed to tighten up at the wrong moment to allow Fognini to level the match at two sets a piece.

Most of the drama occurred in the fifth set. Montanes actually served for the match at 5-3, but he handed Fognini break point chances with some poor unforced errors and the Italian finally converted to level the deciding set.

Fognini started to cramp up in the fourteenth game of the fifth set. Players are not permitted to take an injury timeout for cramps; the Italian claimed the timeout was for something other than cramping. The crowd voiced their displeasure at Fognini’s tactics with a healthy round of booing.

The Italian further added entertainment to proceedings by coming back after the injury time out to rack up 5 foot faults in one game. Amid all the drama, Montanes lost his way and the match against a hobbled opponent.

Fognini will get Monday off before he has to take on Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

no way ricky.

If, as everyone says, the trainer cannot be brought on for cramping, why was the trainer brought on? what's the difference between a muscle spasm (fognini's claim) and cramp?

i did NOT mean in terms of quality!

maxi, Fognini was bending the rules to breaking point and also lying. He said muscle spasm because he couldn't say "cramp". If they're going to enforce that rule, they need to truly enforce it.

That being said, Montanes should have found a way to win that match.

That was one crazy match. Montanes had his opportunities to win for sure. He just was unable to get it done. As far as Fogning, it was obvious that he was still suffering from the cramping but realized that he couldn't get any more treatment unless it was some other injury. So he made up something else. He bent the rules to the breaking point.

There is a big difference between a muscle spasm and a a cramp. A muscle spasm usually results from some type of injury or overexertion or strain. Cramping results from dehydration, usually in a long match in warm, humid conditions. Fognini knows the difference and so does everybody else.
