  • Melzer dismissed, Dolgopolov advances

    5/27/11 2:28 AM | Cheryl Murray
Melzer dismissed, Dolgopolov advances Andy Murray’s section of the draw continues to open up with No. 8 seed Jurgen Melzer ousted in the second round.

    Lukas Rosol def. Jurgen Melzer 6-7(4), 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4

Top Austrian Jurgen Melzer lost a nearly 4-hour grinder to world No. 111 Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic. Melzer had a troubled lead-up to the French Open. He started off playing well in Monte Carlo, but he failed to win a single match in either Madrid or Rome. His fortunes did not get much better in Paris.

Rosol played a hard-hitting game that featured some spectacular winners, but he also hit a staggering 100 unforced errors in the match. Melzer’s loss can be attributed to the Austrian tightening up at the wrong moments and losing too many important points.

    Alexandr Dolgopolov def. Andreas Haider-Maurer 6-2, 6-4, 6-2

The Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov has played his best tennis in the Grand Slams this year. The No. 21 seed came out of nowhere at the Australian Open to make the quarterfinals and based on his play in Paris so far, he might just do it again.

His straight set win over Andreas Haider-Maurer was fairly comfortable. The Austrian earned 6 break point chances, but he couldn’t convert any of them.

Dolgopolov’s third round opponent will be Serbia’s Viktor Troicki.
