Richard Gasquet gets to the fourth round of his home Slam for the first time ever as he dispatches of Thomaz Bellucci.
World No. 16 Richard Gasquet is playing some of his best tennis in years. The Frenchman has clawed his way back from a disastrous 2009 that included a suspension and other form problems. Previously handcuffed by nervous at his home event, Gasquet finally looks at ease on the clay of Roland Garros.
Thomaz Bellucci is capable of playing fantastic clay court tennis. The Brazilian proved it in Madrid when he ploughed through Tomas Berdych and Andy Murray en route to a tough 3-set loss to eventual champ Novak Djokovic. But he couldn’t find that form through the first two sets against Gasquet.
The Frenchman took advantage of a sloppy first set from Bellucci to secure a pair of service breaks. The Brazlian got no traction on Gasquet’s serve and soon found himself a set down.
Gasquet picked up the level of his tennis in the second set. The world No. 16 hit just 3 errors in the set and once again he faced no break points.
Bellucci finally got his feet under him in the third. The Brazilian found range on his forehand and he was able to lure Gasquet into more errors. The victory was short-lived, however.
Gasquet has been known to get nervy when a match started to get tight, but he kept his head beautifully on Friday. His tennis wasn’t as clean as it had been in the first and second sets, but Bellucci’s level dropped just enough for the Frenchman to secure the win in 4.
The Frenchman awaits the winner of Juan Martin Del Potro and Novak Djokovic in the round of 16.
