  • Gasquet, Del Potro into French Open third round

    5/25/11 7:44 PM | Cheryl Murray
Gasquet, Del Potro into French Open third round Juan Martin Del Potro did his part to set up a blockbuster third round meeting with Novak Djokovic with a straight-set victory over Blaz Kavcic.

Juan Martin Del Potro def. Blaz Kavcic 6-3, 6-2, 6-4

Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro earned an easy win over Slovian hopeful Blaz Kavcic. Del Potro is on a collision course with Novak Djokovic in the third round; the Serb played an abbreviated match in the second round against Victor Hanescu.

Del Potro played a clean match against Kavcic with 34 winners to 29 unforced errors. After a groin pull saw him out of Madrid early, there were concerns over the Argentine’s fitness coming into Paris. The good news for Del Potro’s camp is that he looked like he was moving fine and should be ready to go for Djokovic.

    Richard Gasquet def. Marcel Granollers 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4

France’s Richard Gasquet recovered after a blip in the first set to defeat Spaniard Marcel Granollers in four sets. Gasquet was broken twice in opening frame and he had chances to break back with Granollers serving for the set, but he couldn’t convert.

With the crowd encouraging him, Gasquet found his footing in the second set. The Frenchman shored up his serve and cleaned up his unforced errors; he hit just six unforced errors to 16 winners. After gaining the momentum, the No. 13 seed rolled through the remaining two sets to earn a trip to the third round.

Djokovic against DelPotro. The biggest match of the tournament. If Djokovic wins just hand him the trophy.

stratocast51 , 5/26/11 12:55 AM

There's still Gasquet/Bellucci/Fish/Montanes; Fed/Ferrer/Monfils/Tsonga; and then there's Rafa/Murray and the rest. Nole has to earn it, it's never easy. The match against Delpo should be an interesting one. Delpo has such deep flat penetrating groundstrokes and like Nole can attack from both wings. He can hit his shots corner to corner and keeps Nole back behind the baseline, preventing Nole from stepping into the court to attack. It won't be easy for Nole to control the points or dictate play. Nole's chances will be in his own service games where he can drop shot Delpo and brings him to the net and pass him there. Delpo is one difficult opponent on hard and clay courts, whether you're Nole, Fed or Rafa.

luckystar , 5/26/11 5:15 AM

luckystar you are describing an in-form Delpo. Do you think the description fits a Delpo returning after a long lay-off, trying to work his way back to full form, sustaining some hip injury while still in the process and returning to RG without much clay match practice?

holdserve , 5/26/11 5:34 AM

As for stratocast51's claim that Djoko-Delpo match is the biggest match of the tournament, how can a match between two players who have never even been in a RG final be described as the biggest? One has 1 GS and another has 2 GS hardcourt titles. Whereas Nadal is the current world No. 1 with 5 French Opens and is the current defending champion of this title as well as the current holder of two other gs titles. Djoko and Delpo might have great potential but till they prove it, it is ridiculous to claim that they are the only contenders for the French Open crown. stratocast51 is a deluded fan. As most of the deluded fans are Fed fans or Nole fans, he is probably a Fed or Nole fan deluding himself into thinking Rafa is a has-been. I can understand to some extent Djoko being hyped as he is in hot form. But Delpo? Please...

holdserve , 5/26/11 5:45 AM

I don't really see a need to bring in Fed in this discussion. it is not necessary to agree with other's (stratocast51) opinion. But to substantiate don't bring disrespect to other player / his supporter. Just because we are nadal supporters, doesn't mean we can call other supporters "deluded". Infact I love both Fed & Nadal's game. Coming to the contest, yes it is a significant match but not the biggest...

RMadhu , 5/26/11 7:12 AM

gasquet plays bellucci next. wow! i like them both but i think i will go for ritchie though it's going to be a tough fight i'm sure.

i can't see delpo giving nole any trouble. sorry delpo i think you should pay your hotel bill and call your travel agent... ;)

homos , 5/26/11 7:38 AM

I agree with homos on both points. I think Gasquet can take on Bellucci and get the win. This should be must viewing for tennis fans! We will see if Gasquet can step it up on the big stage in a slam.

I don't think that a Delpo just coming back from an injury will be able to trouble a Nole in his current form. He was doing very well and, if he hadn't gotten injured again, then maybe we would have seen a great match. I don't see him having the stamina to stay with Nole.

Nativenewyorker , 5/26/11 8:11 AM

Madhu, if you are really a Nadal fan, then spare me your holier than thou lecture. I have been posting in this forum for sometime now and it is my firm opinion that the deluded fans are either Fed fans or Nole fans. If you disagree, that is fine but kindly do not say that I cannot call them deluded.

holdserve , 5/26/11 8:13 AM

Did you all watch Delpo's match yesterday? He was hitting his shots deep and flat. He moves OK, no sign of any injury, why speak as if he's so useless? Nole on the other hand, plays OK and not spectacular, and that's why Hanescu was able to hang with him for so long, even if minor injury. Nole need not play at his best yet, neither do Delpo. So it will be an interesting match if it can go the distance.

luckystar , 5/26/11 9:01 AM

lucky,

I wasn't fortunate enough to see Delpo's match and that is one that I hoped to see to gauge his form. However, you have done it for me. So you don't see any real signs of rustiness from the brief layoff and any lingering effects from the injury? I am hearing that he does get winded a bit. I only had a brief look at Nole's match with Hanescu. I was surprised that Hanescu made a match out of it. I did hear on another forum that Nole didn't seem to be going all out with his play. Maybe because he knew that he didn't have to?

I am not trying to write off Delpo, but has he ever beaten him in the past? I definitely want to watch this match. It could prove to be very interesting. We will see.

Nativenewyorker , 5/26/11 9:35 AM

i did not watch delpo's match but neither did I watch nole's. i read reviews.

well, nole has a 3-0 lifetime H2H over delpo (who has been out lately with injury) and nole is now very confident and on an unbelievable streak, he beat Rafa in madrid and rome in straights, moving very well, has the most solid backhand right now, etc. is it a crime for me to think that nole will win based on all these facts? i never said Delpo is useless. nole is not stupid enough to take delpo for granted either.

no need to get so angry everytime someone says they think Nole will win. i happen to like nole too and that's my right. i'm getting tired that some people can't give credit to nole; on top of that have tons of opinions on how rafa & others can beat nole. these players should hire such experts to coach them them they would have won the last 4 masters.

enough, tired of having to defend my opinions. can't discuss this, can't discuss that! bye!!!

homos , 5/26/11 10:23 AM

I think del potro is just overated when it compares with Nole. Delpo during his in form year never even get a set from the previous Nole (hardcourt and clay, H2H is 3-0). What makes most people think he will beat the current Nole? Nole will win in straights (6-4, 6-3, 7-5). But for sure, I am going to enjoy this match.

Alexthia23 , 5/26/11 10:23 AM

Homos, thank you for that.

samprallica , 5/26/11 10:34 AM

homos, nobody is angry. As you yourself said, you didn't watch the matches, how come jumped into conclusion that Delpo can't play well at present? When I said Delpo can make it interesting, why straight away jump into conclusion that I think he'll beat Nole? Why suddenly turn so defensive towards Nole? I'm also SICK of such accusation that I'm one of those who talk about how to beat Nole all the time. If it's easy to beat Nole somebody would have done so by now, no need any discussions here! Didn't people talk about how to beat Rafa on clay
All the time too?

I saw the matches and gave my opinions, and I mentioned what Delpo was/is capable of doing. I also mentioned what Nole is capable of doing. I think my opinions are fair, you need not worry about people not giving Nole any credit. OK more of Nole from me, I wash my hands off, I'm sick of all these!!

luckystar , 5/26/11 10:54 AM

No more of Nole from me, I wash my hands off. Satisfied?

luckystar , 5/26/11 10:56 AM

If it was Rafa who was coming up against Delpo, Delpo would have been talked up and we would have been told how Rafa wouldn't be able to cope with his f/h and his big serve bla, bla, bla.

No respect for Rafa WHATSOEVER generally.

AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!

nadline , 5/26/11 11:52 AM

luckystar is right. Delpo was striking the ball well and moving well. He played a lot better than I thought he would.

I don't think he's going to be a big threat to Djokovic, but make no mistake -- he IS playing well.

cherylmurray , 5/26/11 1:39 PM

"If it was Rafa who was coming up against Delpo, Delpo would have been talked up and we would have been told how Rafa wouldn't be able to cope with his f/h and his big serve bla, bla, bla."

.............and Nadline, that was after Rafa had won numerous GSlams AND masters titles!!!!........and I could still hear them saying, oh Delpo is a bad match up for Rafa.............blah, blah, blah!!!!

Its just sickening!!!!.................all that green envy at Rafa!!!

VAMOS!!!!!!

Monalysa , 5/26/11 2:58 PM

Del potro in RD 3 now this is what you call a tough draw nadal fans think he has a tough draw playing oldies like davydenko and non clay court players like isner

tennis2011 , 5/26/11 5:42 PM

^^^Did you know that Isner took Nole to 5 sets in Serbia last year? Obviously not.

nadline , 5/26/11 8:17 PM

^^^^And that was on clay.

nadline , 5/26/11 8:18 PM

I did not see Delpo playing at FO but I trust you guys he is playing well...however, Nole is playing exceptionally well and I do not think Delpo can beat him...But I must admit I never believed in Delpo...when he beat Rafa at USO 2009 I thought it was expected since Rafa was injured and played poorly...and there was no way I was going to pick Delpo over Fed in finals...but he did what he did and the rest is history...so, he sure is unpredictable...

natashao , 5/26/11 8:53 PM

nadline, 5/26/11 11:52 AM

WOW!!! No one on this thread has said anything of this sort. You are only speculating yet accusing people of disrespecting Rafa. Rafa isn't coming up against Delpo!!!!!!! Rafa isn't even included here... So defensive!!!

jean , 5/27/11 6:27 AM

homos: great post.
