Andy Murray and Jurgen Melzer made their way into the second round with straight-set victories.
Andy Murray def. Eric Prodon 6-4, 6-1, 6-3
While this wasn’t No. 4 seed Andy Murray at his best, he had plenty of game to defeat French qualifier Eric Prodon in straight sets. Murray served for the first set at 5-3, and was actually broken, but he came back with a good return game of his own to take the set at 6-4.
The Frenchman lost steam quickly. He gave little resistance in the second set and by the third set, he looked completely deflated. Murray was off court in under 2 hours.
Jurgen Melzer def. Andreas Beck 6-3, 6-4, 6-2
Austria’s Jurgen Melzer won his first match in 3 tournaments with a comfortable ouster of Germany’s Andreas Beck. The German had chances in each of the three sets to break Melzer’s serve, but he was only successful 1 time in 8 chances. Unfortunately for Beck, that break came in the third set, when he was broken himself 3 times.
Melzer will take on either Lukas Rosol and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the second round.
