Nicolas Almagro went crashing out of the French Open at the hands of Polish qualifier Lukasz Kubot in a Paris shocker.
The French Open first round continues to provide upsets. On Monday, No. 6 Tomas Berdych was knocked out by French qualifier Stephane Robert. Today, the upset honors went to Polish qualifier Lukasz Kubot.
Almagro gave a lesson in how to lose a lead in this match. The Spaniard enjoyed a comfortable two sets lead headed into the third set. He was soundly outplaying Kubot, when out of nowhere, the Pole fronted up on serve in the third to force a tiebreaker which he promptly pocketed at 7-3.
The Spaniard got ahead twice in the fourth set, once for 4-2 and a second time he served for the match at 6-5 only to be broken. He once again failed to perform in the tiebreaker.
The No. 11 seed gave one more display of losing a lead in the fifth. The Spaniard went up 3-0, once again failed to hold onto the lead and for good measure gave up another break to lose the match.
