Tournament seed Gael Monfils is through to the second round at the French Open, following his four-set win over Bjorn Phau. The Frenchman is joined by Steve Darcis, who upset 22nd seed Michael Llodra.

Ninth seed Gael Monfils made a successful start to the tournament, having rallied to an opening-round victory over qualifier Bjorn Phau Monday afternoon. The 24-year-old Frenchman collected 24 winners and six service breaks, en route to a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-0 win in two hours and 17 minutes of play. An error-prone German donated 5 double faults and 59 unforced errors through four sets.
Monfils will face compatriot Guillaume Rufin for a place in the third round. The Frenchman defeated countryman Adrian Mannarino in the first round, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2.

Qualifier Steve Darcis is through to the second round after scoring an upset victory against 22nd seed Michael Llodra. The 27-year-old Belgian rallied through to a 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 win in two hours and 26 minutes. Darcis completed his effort with 48 winners and five of 12 break points coverted.
He is slated to battle Philipp Petzschner in the next round. The German downed compatriot Mischa Zverev in the opening round, 7-6(3), 6-0, 6-4.
