Juan Martin Del Potro and Novak Djokovic each won their first round matches on Monday to advance to the second round.
Novak Djokovic def. Thiemo De Bakker 6-2, 6-1, 6-3
Novak Djokovic made a strong statement in his opening match against Thiemo De Bakker. The Serb’s movement was superb and his groundstrokes were clean, but the real damage came off Djokovic’s serve. The world No. 2 served at 80% for the match and won 87 points to De Bakker’s 52.
De Bakker barely gave Djokovic a workout and at no time in the match was Djokovic ever in any danger of even losing a set. He will take on Nice finalist Victor Hanescu in the second round.
Juan Martin Del Potro def. Ivo Karlovic 6-7(7), 6-3, 7-5, 6-4
Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro overcame a one-set deficit to big-serving Ivo Karlovic to move into the second round in 4 sets. As usual, Karlovic made life difficult for Del Potro. The towering Croat smacked 22 aces and managed to make it through the first set without getting broken. His return game was not sufficient to earn any breaks against Del Potro, but he managed to pull out the opening set in the tiebreaker.
Del Potro took the match in hand in the second set. The Argentine played as well as can be expected against a player like Karlovic, who doesn’t play with any rhythm. There were no signs of the thigh injury that saw Del Potro out of Madrid early. Del Potro will face Blaz Kavcic in the second round.
