Tsonga, Stakhovsky advance to second round Tournament seeds Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Sergiy Stakhovsky are through to the second round in Paris, after scoring wins over respective opponents Jan Hajek and qualifier David Guez.

    (17) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. Jan Hajek 6-3, 6-2, 6-2

Seventeenth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga made a successful start to the tournament, having downed Jan Hajek in three sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. The 26-year-old Frenchman, who passed through the match unbroken, scored 8 aces and 25 winners through one hour and 58 minutes of play.

"I was relatively relaxed and I started the match really well," Tsonga explained, post-match. "I dominated him throughout. It was not obvious because of the gusts of wind. It was not my best type of tennis but, given the conditions, it was not bad."

Tsonga will face either compatriot Florent Serra or Igor Andreev for a spot in the third round.

    (31) Sergiy Stakhovsky def. (Q) David Guez 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-3, 6-3

Thirty-first seed Sergiy Stakhovsky rallied through to a four-set victory over qualifier David Guez on Sunday. The 25-year-old Ukranian dropped the opening-set tie-break, but held on to win in four, 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. Stakhovsky tallied 13 aces, 36 winners and 8 service breaks, en route to the first-round win in two hours and 53 minutes.

He is next to battle Kei Nishikori in round two. Nishikori took out Yen-Hsun Lu in the first round, 6-1, 6-3, 6-4.
