Lleyton Hewitt made a late withdrawal only hours before his intended start at the French Open, with the one-time No. 1 unable to play as his continuing left ankle problem flared up.
The 30-year-old underwent surgery on the joint this spring after playing his last match in mid-March, a first-round loss at Indian Wells. He also went out in the Australian Open first round and produced a pair of quarter-finals indoors in the US at San jose and Memphis.
Hewitt has slowly faded from the height of his powers when he ruled as a teenaged No. 1 and 2002 Wimbledon winner. His ankle apparently did not heal as quickly as he might have liked after his operation. That procedure came in the wake of a pair of hip operations earlier in his career.
Only three days before the start of play, Hewitt withdrew from a light exhibition event in Paris, an indication of his lack of fitness. After skipping his only event of the clay season, he is next due to defend his Halle title on grass at the event where he overhauled Roger Federer in the final.
