Ernests Gulbis continued his downward spiral on Sunday at Roland Garros with a first round ouster at the hands of Blaz Kavcic.
Blaz Kavcic def. Ernests Gulbis 6-1, 6-4, 6-2
As recently as February of this year, Ernests Gulbis was ranked 21 in the world; the Latvian now sits at No. 83 and finds himself out of the French Open after one match.
The lopsided result of this match wasn’t simply due to Gulbis’s poor play. Blaz Kavcic served well and generally played good baseline tennis. The Slovakian is a relative late-bloomer; he is 24 years old and still ranked 82 in the world, but he seems to be coming into his game finally.
Kavcic will play the winner of Juan Martin Del Potro and Ivo Karlovic in the second round.
Andreas Seppi def. Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-3, 7-5, 7-5
Italy’s Andreas Seppi played a clean match to get past Teymuraz Gabashvili. The Italian secured a pair of service breaks in the first set, but he was broken once himself early on. Seppi shored up his serve in the second and third sets, however. He didn’t face another break point in the match. He had a bit of trouble converting on break points against Gabashvili, going 2 for 11 in the final two sets, but he was able to secure a break of serve right at the tail-end of each set to win in straights.
Seppi will take on the winner of Andrey Golubev and Thomaz Bellucci in the second round.
