Croatia’s Marin Cilic bombed out of the first round of the French Open to a player that has won just a single tour-level Grand Slam match coming into the first round.
The No. 19 seed put in a dismal effort to go down in straight sets to 33 year-old Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, who is ranked right at No. 100 in the world.
Ramirez Hidalgo didn’t need to play great tennis to upset Cilic; he was simply required to keep the ball in play long enough to tempt Cilic into an error. The Croat seemed all-too happy to oblige. Cilic committed a whopping 67 unforced errors in the straight-set encounter.
After dropping the first two sets, Cilic once again found himself in a hole in the third set. Ramirez Hidalgo served for the match at 5-2, but got nervy and handed one of the service breaks back to the Croat.
Cilic looked like he might be poised to make a comeback. The No. 19 seed held and earned 0-30 on Ramirez Hidalgo’s next service game. A horrendous error from Cilic cost him the chance to go up 0-40 and the Spanish journeyman held onto his nerve enough to serve out the match on his second opportunity.

Don't know what to say about Marin. I think he has to lose in the first round of every tournament he plays, amassed a grand total of 180 points, drops his ranking to outside of top100, before he will finally wakes up to play. There's no joy in his play, it's like he's being dragged to the court to play and so he's unwilling to do anything to win.
Maybe when he's down and out, when nobody notices him anymore, when nobody even bothers with this guy, then he'll decide either to quit permanently or to pick himself up, comes from nowhere and starts winning and beating everyone who stands in his way. One can only hope for the latter to happen.
