The host Germans capture the 2011 World Team Cup on Saturday in Dusseldorf. After splitting the singles rubbers, Germany gets a clinching doubles win from Philipp Kohlschreiber and Philipp Petzschner.
Germany won the World Team Cup on Saturday in Dusseldorf, edging defending champion Argentina 2-1 in the final. It is Germany's first triumph at the event since 2005.
Florian Mayer got the host Germans off to a quick start by defeating Juan Monaco 7-6(4), 6-0 in the opening singles rubber. Monaco actually led with an early break in the first set, but it was all Mayer the rest of the way. The world No. 21 forced a tiebreaker, rolled through it seven points to four, then dominated the second without losing a single game.
Mayer converted all three of his break chances in set two and won all eight of his second-serve return points.
Philipp Kohlschreiber had a chance to finish off Argentina right away in singles, but he could not overcome an in-form Juan Ignacio Chela. The Argentine had won all three of his previous singles matches in straight sets and he did the same on Saturday. Chela failed to serve out the proceedings at 5-4 in the second set, but he recovered to win a tiebreaker and see off Kohlschreiber 6-4, 7-6(4).
That set the stage for an all-important doubles rubber. Germany sent Kohlschreiber back to the court for a partnership with Philipp Petzschner. The Argentines countered with Chela and Maximo Gonzalez. Chela and Gonzalez did well to battle back from a set and a break down, but the Germans eventually prevailed 6-3, 7-6(5) for the clinching point.
