Nicolas Almagro won his third title of the year in the South of France as the countdown to Roland Garros winds to a close.
With a third clay crown to his name just this year, Nicolas Almagro will go into the French Open expected to perform well. The Spaniard put on a good showing last year in Paris, advancing to the quartefinals and giving eventual champion Rafael Nadal a test before falling in 3 sets.
Victor Hanescu did not make life easy for Almagro in the opening set. The two men combined for a whopping 6 service breaks – accounting for a full half of the games played. With 3 breaks of serve each, the set was decided with a tiebreaker, which Hanescu eventually won 7-5.
Almagro is the more experienced in big match play. The Spaniard rebounded nicely in the second set, and in a reversal from the opening frame, he didn’t face a single break point. Hanescu was broken twice and with the momentum firmly on Almagro’s side, the two men went into the deciding set.
Almagro drew blood first, but Hanescu had a little bit left in the tank. The Romanian broke back early to level the match, but Almagro’s superior returning won out in the end.
Both men will head right to Paris next with Almagro as the No. 11 seed taking on Lukasz Kubot and Hanescu battling Benoit Paire.
