The World Team Cup comes down to Germany vs. Argentina on Saturday. The host Germans are sending Florian Mayer and Philipp Kohlschreiber to the court while the defending champion Argentines counter with Juan Monaco and Juan Ignacio Chela.
Argentina will be seek back-to-back titles at the World Team Cup and its second title in five years when it goes up against Germany in the final on Saturday in Dusseldorf. The host Germans last triumphed in 2005.
Kicking off the tie will be Germany's Florian Mayer and Juan Monaco of Argentina. Mayer leads the head-to-head series 3-1--including 2-1 on clay--but the two veterans have not faced each other since 2006.
Mayer is 2-0 in singles action so far this week. The world No. 21 hammered Serbia's Viktor Troicki 6-2, 6-2 before overcoming Marcel Granollers of Spain 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Monaco is also perfect so far and has been especially impressive. The world No. 38 is 2-0 in singles (straight-set wins over Andrey Golubev and Mardy Fish) and 3-0 in doubles.
The second singles rubber will be contested by Philipp Kohlschreiber and Juan Ignacio Chela. After splitting a pair of meetings last season, Chela leads the head-to-head series 2-1 but it is tied at one apiece on the slow stuff.
Kohlschreiber played singles in all three of Germany's ties; he beat Janko Tipsarevic in straight sets and Mikhail Youzhny in three with a three-set loss to Daniel Gimeno-Traver in between. The world No. 44's win over Youzhny clinched the host nation's spot in the final. Chela, ranked one spot ahead of Kohlschreiber, is an outstanding 3-0 in singles and did not drop a single set in victories over Mikhail Kukushkin, Christian Lindell, and John Isner.
If Germany and Argentina split the two singles matches, a doubles rubber will decide the championship.
