Philipp Kohlschreiber beats Mikhail Youzhny in three sets on Friday in Dusseldorf to send the host Germans into the final. Germany and Argentina will square off for the championship.
Philipp Kohlschreiber sent Germany through to the World Team Cup final by defeating Mikhail Youzhny 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and 17 minutes on Friday. Kohlschreiber's win clinched the Blue Group for the host Germans and they will meet defending champion Argentina for the title on Saturday.
For a while, however, it looked like Youzhny would prevail and keep the suspense going. The Russian saved all three of the break points he faced in the first set so two breaks of his own were more than enough for Youzhny to serve out the opening frame of play at 5-2.
To the delight of the crowd, though, Kohlschreiber fought back and took control the rest of the way. The German finished off set two on serve at 5-3 and raced away with the third. Kohlschreiber's fifth break of the day at 4-2 all but clinched victory and he made no mistake with the match on his racket one game later.
All four teams in the Blue Group had been 1-1 entering the final round-robin ties, but Germany already held an edge in individual matches won. With Philipp Petzschner having previously erased Igor Andreev on Thursday, the host nation's lead is now insurmountable.
