David Nalbandian's grass-court pedigree, earned nine years ago with a losing Wimbledon final against Lleyton Hewitt, still resonates with British tennis officials who have given the Argentine a wild card entry into next month's Queen's event.
The classic Wimbledon tune-up will be the first competition in months for the 29-year-old who is ill and skipping the French Open after recovering from an abdominal strain from months ago.
Since playing Hewitt for the title at the All England club in 2002, Nalbandian has all but gone missing from the grass; a Queen's semi-final three years ago was his next best effort.
But he is hoping for a re-boot from June 6 when he steps onto the lawns. "It's been a frustrating time, but my recovery is going well and I expect to be in good shape for the tournament," said the South American .
"I enjoy playing on grass, and reaching the Wimbledon final in 2002 was a special moment in my career. I hope to have a successful grass court season this year."
Queen's will also feature the world's top two in Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic along with Andy Murray and four-time champion Andy Roddick.
