Defending champion Argentina is back in the Dusseldorf final after sweeping the United States in singles on Thursday. Juan Monaco and Juan Ignacio Chela provide their country with the winning points.
Juan Monaco and Juan Ignacio Chela put defending champion Argentina back in the World Team Cup final with singles victories over the United States on Thursday in Dusseldorf. Monaco beat Mardy Fish 7-6(4), 7-5 and Chela clinched victory with a 6-1, 7-6(1) win over John Isner to give the Argentines an insurmountable 2-0 lead in a rematch of last year's championship tie.
Although Monaco and Fish played only two sets, they stayed out there for a grueling two hours and 15 minutes. A tense first set saw Monaco give back an early break before both players held en route to a tiebreaker. The Argentine, clutch on crucial points the entire way, won the 'breaker seven points to four to gain the upper hand.
In the second set it was Monaco's turn to give away a lead. A streak of four straight breaks took place midway through the second, with the world No. 38 twice failing to consolidate breaks. Monaco finally began to hold, though, and he struck for a match-clinching scalp of the Fish serve at 6-5. The American saved two match points at 0-40 down, but he failed to handle a Monaco overhead smash at 30-40.
Chela, who beat Isner 6-4, 6-1 last week in Rome, appeared to be on his way to a another routine win when he took the first set 6-1 on Thursday. Isner, however, fought back in the second and forced a tiebreaker. An even set had seen both players get looks at multiple break chances, but the 'breaker was all Chela. The Argentine raced to a 6-0 advantage and converted his second match point at 6-1 when Isner sent a backhand long.
In Blue Group action, meanwhile, Germany and Serbia have the upper hand in their final round-robin ties. Philipp Petzschner put the host Germans ahead of Russia 1-0 by cruising past Igor Andreev 6-2, 6-4. Serbia's Viktor Troicki gave his country the first point against Spain thanks to a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Marcel Granollers.
