The Blue Group is Dusseldorf comes down to the final day of round-robin action on Friday. Singles matches feature Philipp Kohlschreiber against Mikhail Youzhny and Janko Tipsarevic against Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
Philipp Kohlschreiber will have a chance to put host Germany in the World Team Cup final when he takes the court for a showdown with Mikhail Youzhny on Friday afternoon.
All four countries in the Red Group currently have 1-1 overall records, but the Germans are 5-2 in individual matches. A Kohlschreiber victory would clinch a 2-1 record for the home team and at least six match wins, a mark none of the other three nations can reach.
Kohlschreiber and Youzhny have faced each other on six previous occasions, and the German is dominating the head-to-head series 5-1--including 2-0 on clay. They squared off last week in Rome, where Kohlschreiber hammered Youzhny 6-4, 6-2.
More of the same has continued in Dusseldorf, where Youzhny is struggling. The Russian earned a straight-set win over Marcel Granollers on Sunday, but he got blown out by Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-1 on Tuesday. Kohlschreiber is also 1-1 with a straight-set victory over Janko Tipsarevic and a three-set defeat at the hands of Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
If Youzhny prevails, the Blue Group will be wide open and a clash between Serbia and Spain will become relevant. Serbia leads the tie 1-0 heading into the second singles rubber between Tipsarevic and Gimeno-Traver. Tipsarevic is 0-1 this week while Gimeno-Traver is 1-1, having lost to Igor Andreev in a third-set tiebreaker to go along with his win over Kohlschreiber.
